The Town of Durham picked up top honours in the national Communities in Bloom competition in the 1,500 to 5,000 population category scoring the highest marks with five blooms being awarded. The winners were announced at a gala event held Saturday, October 4; Adopt-Our-Town Committee spearheaded the effort for the contest. The Town also picked up an honourable mention for its community involvement.
Durham had experienced severe flooding in the spring of 97 but it wasnt until the snow receded in March that the Town and the Committee realized the full extent of the damages, which was pegged at $1 million. The amount of damage seemed to work as a catalyst as hundreds of volunteers joined work parties to assist in the cleanup required in preparation of the competition judging.
Volunteers from the Kitchener Parks and Recreation who were competing as well but at the Provincial level also provided assistance. Durham became eligible to compete in the national competition by winning the 1996 Provincial title. The residents of Durham have demonstrated a tremendous amount of heart and community spirit by combining their efforts and providing significant volunteer hours to achieve such success. The judges also applauded the towns mural program which was initiated three years ago noting that they enhanced otherwise barren walls. This win opens new opportunities for promoting the community as a tourist and business attraction and we invite you to visit us and see for yourself.
